Why did my car hire price double at the Orlando desk?

The short answer

Because the headline rate was car-only. Loss damage waiver (~$30-40/day), liability cover (~$15-20/day), and a toll transponder (~$10-15/day) are all extras at the desk — on a fortnight's hire that's $800+ on top of the 'bargain' rate.

US supplier websites quote the legal minimum: the car. UK broker packages usually bundle damage waiver, liability, and sometimes tolls — which is why a 'more expensive' UK quote is frequently cheaper than a 'cheap' US one once you're standing at the desk with a queue behind you.

The desk agent isn't scamming you; they're selling what the rate never included. The fix is knowing what your quote covers before you fly, and having the confidence to decline what you already have.

Watch the fuel policy too: prepaid tanks don't refund unused fuel, and Orlando is aggressively tolled with cashless plazas — an unregistered toll run generates admin fees that dwarf the tolls themselves.
