My ESTA expires during my trip — is that OK?

The short answer
Yes. An ESTA only needs to be valid on the day you board your flight to the US. If it expires while you're there, nothing happens — your permission to stay comes from the admission stamp, not the ESTA.
This is the single most-asked ESTA question, and the answer is genuinely reassuring: the ESTA is a pre-boarding authorisation, not a visa. It's checked when you check in and board. Once you've been admitted at the border, the ESTA has done its job.
The confusion comes from mixing it up with the passport rule, which is the opposite: your passport must be valid for your whole stay. If your passport expires mid-trip, that is a real problem — renew before you travel.
One more wrinkle: an ESTA lasts two years from approval or until the passport it's tied to expires, whichever is first. A new passport always means a new ESTA, even if the old one had time left.
